WebRTC vs. Cloud Recording: The Truth About Nursery Privacy
The Hidden Risk of Cloud Smart Monitors
In recent years, news headlines have repeatedly covered smart baby monitors and nursery security cameras that were hacked, leaked customer credentials, or suffered unauthorized viewing by bad actors.
The fundamental vulnerability in most modern commercial smart cameras is their cloud-mediated streaming architecture. When a standard Wi-Fi camera records, it continuously uploads unencrypted or server-decrypted video streams to an external cloud data center. Once your video sits on a cloud server, it becomes vulnerable to compromised employee credentials, database leaks, subpoena requests, and third-party AI training ingestion.
How WebRTC Solves Nursery Privacy
WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) is an open internet standard maintained by the IETF and W3C that facilitates direct, peer-to-peer audio and video transmission between web browsers and mobile devices.
The WebRTC Security Stack:
- DTLS (Datagram Transport Layer Security): Negotiates session encryption keys directly between device endpoints. The signaling server never receives the keys.
- SRTP (Secure Real-Time Transport Protocol): Encrypts every individual video and audio packet in transit using AES-128 or AES-256 cipher suites.
- Zero Ingestion: Because communication travels directly between the baby phone and parent phone, our signaling servers only broker connection metadata (SDP offers and ICE candidates), never the media itself.
Architecture Comparison
| Feature | Traditional Cloud Monitors | Baby Zzz's (WebRTC P2P) |
|---|---|---|
| Stream Routing | Camera → Cloud Server → Parent | Camera → Direct to Parent |
| Cloud Storage | Stored on servers for 7–30 days | No video recording (only an optional last-frame thumbnail) |
| Latency | Often several seconds of delay | Low (direct, no cloud server in between) |
| Cost | Monthly cloud storage fees | Free with ads; optional Premium removes ads |
What Happens on Restricted Networks? (TURN Relays)
When both devices are at home on the same Wi-Fi, packets flow entirely over your local home network without ever leaving your house.
When you leave home and monitor from cellular data, symmetric NATs and carrier firewalls may prevent direct P2P socket discovery. In this case, for Premium subscribers, WebRTC routes packets through our coturn TURN (Traversal Using Relays around NAT) server (the free plan uses direct connections only). Importantly, the TURN relay forwards pre-encrypted SRTP packets as blind binary payloads. The relay cannot decrypt, decode, or inspect the audio or video feed.
Summary
By choosing peer-to-peer WebRTC over cloud recording, parents get low-latency live video, no cloud storage fees (the app is free with ads, and Premium is optional), and peace of mind knowing their child's nursery stays private.
