Troubleshooting P2P Video, Wi-Fi NATs & Cellular Fallback

Diagnosing Common Connection Issues

Baby Zzz's is designed to connect seamlessly across varied network conditions. If you ever experience a video freeze, audio drop, or black screen, this guide helps you resolve it quickly.

1. Black Screen or "Connecting..." Spinner

If the monitor shows a spinner or black screen without loading video frames:

  • Verify Camera Permissions: On the baby camera unit, open device system settings and confirm that Baby Zzz's has permission to access the Camera and Microphone.
  • Confirm Baby Unit is in Foreground: Mobile operating systems pause video capture when an app is minimized or backgrounded. Ensure Baby Zzz's is in the foreground on the camera unit.
  • Network Firewall Checks: Some corporate or hotel Wi-Fi networks block UDP traffic entirely. Switch the parent device to cellular data (LTE/5G) to test if the local Wi-Fi router is blocking WebRTC.

2. How the Encrypted Relay (Premium) Works

In normal circumstances, WebRTC exchanges STUN packets to discover public IP addresses and open a direct P2P socket. However, when one or both devices are behind symmetric NAT routers (often found on mobile carriers or restrictive routers), direct P2P negotiation fails.

With Premium, Baby Zzz's automatically falls back to our coturn TURN relay server. The relay acts as an encrypted passthrough. No configuration is required on your part; connecting through the relay can take a few seconds longer than a direct connection. On the free plan, connections are direct only: if the app says Can't connect on this network (older versions keep connecting or show a connection error), switch one of the devices to another network, such as home Wi-Fi, or upgrade to Premium.

While a stream is relayed, its video bitrate is capped so it stays smooth on slow networks: the picture is a little softer, and sound is not affected.

3. High-Pitched Audio Screech / Feedback Loop

If you hear a loud, screeching audio loop when setting up your devices, this occurs when both devices are in the same room. The parent unit microphone is picking up the speaker output, creating acoustic feedback.

Solution: Mute the parent device while configuring in the same room, or separate the devices by more than 15 feet. Once the camera is in the nursery and the parent monitor is in the living room or bedroom, feedback cannot occur.

4. Preventing Android Battery Throttling

Modern operating systems aggressively throttle or sleep background apps to save battery life. To ensure uninterrupted night monitoring:

  • Keep the baby camera unit connected to wall power.
  • On Android devices, go to Settings → Battery → Battery Optimization, find Baby Zzz's, and select "Don't Optimize".
  • The parent phone does not need its screen on: the sound keeps playing with the screen off or in another app, and crying alerts arrive even when the app is closed. Keep it charged overnight. If you want the video on screen, set a longer screen timeout in your phone's display settings.

5. Not Getting Crying Alerts?

  • Notifications allowed: on your phone, allow notifications for Baby Zzz's in the system settings. The app shows a note under Settings → Baby alerts when they are off.
  • Alert turned on for that camera: in Settings → Baby alerts, check that crying is set to Alarm or Notification, and that the camera is not snoozed.
  • The nursery phone is listening: it must be streaming as a camera, with Listen for noise and crying on under Settings → This phone as a camera. Try a higher sensitivity if quiet crying is missed.
  • Watching that camera already: a phone that is watching a camera gets no alert from it, since you can already hear it.
  • Alarm silent in Do Not Disturb: allow the Do Not Disturb access the app asks for under Settings → Baby alerts, and do not mute alarms in your Do Not Disturb settings.
